Athen’s Quilt Celebration
- November 16th & 17th Quilt Celebration
We are excited for the first time the three quilt guilds in Athens have joined together to celebrate quilting. The celebration will feature a display of quilts in the sanctuary of the Presbyterian Church on Jefferson and a large selection of baked and hand crafted items in the Rogers Center. Please drop by and learn more about who we are and what we do. There will be a special display of vintage quilts from local Athens quilters, their mothers and even grandmothers so don’t miss the fun. There will be no charge. Starts Friday afternoon at 4:00 till 7:00 and Saturday at 10:00 till 7:00.

What Is A Modern Quilt
Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. “Modern traditionalism” or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.roaches.
This is the definition of a modern quilt from The Modern Quilt Guild. We are officially members of The Modern Quilt Guild. So let’s look at that definition. Here are some of the things that will make your quilt or art modern.
- Did you use bold colors and prints
- Is there a lot of high contrast
- Do you have areas of solid color
- Is your piecing improvised
- Is the minimalism and negative space
- Modern traditionalism
- Does your quilt show alternate grid work
